How the 2027 Social Security COLA May Affect Medicare
Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027, following the Social Security Administration’s October 14, 2026, announcement. This increase is the largest adjustment to Social Security benefits since 2023 and is expected to affect roughly 76 million people who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
While a higher monthly benefit can be welcome news, it is important to understand how the change may affect your overall budget. Medicare premiums can be deducted from Social Security payments, so the amount deposited each month may not reflect the full increase.
At Wolken Insurance Services, we help individuals and families in Apple Valley and beyond make sense of Medicare coverage and related insurance decisions. Here is a closer look at the 2027 COLA, other Social Security updates, and why reviewing Medicare costs matters.
What Will the 3.6% COLA Mean for Your Benefits?
Beginning in January 2027, Social Security monthly payments will rise by 3.6%. The prior year’s adjustment was 2.8%, making the new increase notably larger for many beneficiaries.
The Social Security Administration estimates that the average retired worker’s monthly benefit will increase by about $75, rising from $2,095 to $2,170. Over a full year, that works out to approximately $900 in additional benefits for the average recipient.
SSI recipients will also receive the 3.6% adjustment. Their revised payments are scheduled to begin on December 31, 2026. Because the adjustment is calculated as a percentage, the exact increase each person receives will depend on their current benefit amount.
The purpose of the COLA is to help benefits retain purchasing power when the cost of everyday needs rises. However, higher expenses for health care and other essentials may still limit how far the increase goes.
How the Social Security Administration Calculates COLA
Each year, the SSA reviews changes in the cost of commonly purchased goods and services, including food, transportation, and housing. It uses an inflation measure known as the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W.
To establish the annual adjustment, the agency compares CPI-W figures from July through September with the figures from the same months in the preceding year. That comparison produced the 3.6% increase for 2027.
Although this method is intended to align benefits with inflation, individual spending patterns vary. For many people, health care costs can rise differently than other household expenses, which is one reason it is helpful to review both your Social Security payment and your Medicare expenses together.
Other Social Security Updates for 2027
The benefit increase is not the only Social Security update for 2027. The SSA also announced changes that may matter to people who are still employed, nearing retirement, or receiving retirement or survivor benefits while earning income.
For 2027, the maximum annual earnings subject to Social Security taxes will rise from $184,500 to $192,300. This change affects the amount of earned income that is subject to Social Security payroll taxes.
The earnings limit for people collecting Social Security retirement or survivor benefits will also apply differently depending on full retirement age. If you remain below full retirement age throughout 2027, the earnings limit will be $25,560.
If you reach full retirement age during 2027, the earnings limit will be $67,920 for income earned before the month you reach that age. After you have reached full retirement age, there is no earnings limit.
Why Medicare Premiums May Change Your Net Increase
A Social Security COLA raises your gross monthly benefit, but it does not always mean you will receive the entire increase in your bank account. For many beneficiaries, Medicare Part B premiums are deducted directly from their Social Security payment.
If Part B premiums rise in 2027, those higher deductions may reduce part of the additional income created by the COLA. The impact will depend on your personal benefit amount and the Medicare premiums that apply to you.
This is why it is useful to look beyond the percentage increase alone. Reviewing your updated Social Security benefit statement alongside your Medicare costs can provide a clearer picture of what you may have available each month.
